Allison Lee – Founder & CEO, Hemster
Growing up in South Korea, Allison Lee thought that on-site alterations were a normal part of the shopping experience. So when she moved to the U.S. and discovered that most stores offered a limited number of sizes and sent customers away without offering to tailor the item, the culture shock and frustration set in. “Why are we okay with that?” asks Lee. She started Hemster in 2016 to bring a “made-to-measure experience” to more retailers. Today, customers can receive free tailoring at 50 retailers like DVF, Outdoor Voices and Reformation. Measurements are taken in-store and local tailors then alter the garments in as little as 48 hours, with the retailer picking up the tab. In 2019, Hemster customized 50,000 items. Hemster charges a set-up fee, plus takes a cut on each alteration. Lee raised $4 million this summer. In 2020, Allison made Forbes’ prestigious 30 Under 30 list.
